Listen to the new TOOL song 'Fear Inoculum'

We got there TOOL fans… 13 years and change since 2006’s 10,000 Days, TOOL have shared the title track off their fifth LP, Fear Inoculum. As expected, the song is a proggy hard rock beast clocking in at over 10 minutes. You can pre-order the new record, which comes out on August 30th, right now.

Guitarist Adam Jones revealed some details in Guitar World saying the new record will be 80 minutes. He also talked about some themes on the record.

I took a picture pointing to the number seven while we were recording, and a lot of the riffs Justin [Chancellor, bassist] and I brought in were in seven. You don’t really go, ‘I’m going to write a riff in seven!’ Without being too descriptive about the concept, the main thing is that the seven beat just kept coming up, and riffs in seven kept coming up. It was really weird!”

“Then Maynard told me about a whole concept he had about the number seven. We were all, like, ‘Oh my God! This is too weird!’ Then Alex Grey [TOOL album artist] basically said the same thing and he has a concept that will reveal itself through video.”

He also shared how Metallica’s Kirk Hammett has inspired some of his guitar playing.

The last time I saw Kirk Hammett, I asked and he sent me a video of this forwards/backwards run going up and down the neck of the guitar and it really helped my playing a lot. Instead of doing something like just trying to learn the lead in “Master of Puppets,” I asked what he does to keep himself good, but I think it’s better to learn how someone practices and apply it to your own ideas. I highly recommend it.”

And here’s some hipster bro sad that his favourite band is still making music…weird to me, but I can see how some people might relate. We do like to “own” our favourite things.
